SUMMARY |
| To The Golden Shore |
Anderson, Courtney |
I have read quite a few other books about Adoniram
Judson, but this is the best one so far. It has such
depth of detail and so many quotations from his actual
letters and writings. The Judsons' life and work in
Burma is amazing, and the physical cost to their health
was very great. It also tells a great deal about Mr.
Judson's three marriages and the great help that his
wives were to his mission.

| Memorable Women of the Puritan Times |
Anderson, James |
1862. Volumes 1 and 2 of the original work. The
Puritan times embrace the most interesting and
instructive period in the annals of English history.
Most of the eminent women commemorated in these volumes
may be considered as historical characters. They may not
have acted in any very conspicuous part in the public
transactions of their time, or have given to it its mold
and importance; but they stood closely connected by
relationship or otherwise with the master spirits and
prime actors. The incidents of their lives relate rather
to the domestic, than to public events; for even when
public history is touched upon, it is generally
intermingled with or bearing upon domestic scenes.

| God's Smuggler |
Andrew, Brother |
Description: As a boy he dreamed of being a spy -
undercover behind enemy lines. As a man he found himself
undercover for God. Brother Andrew was his name, and for
decades his life story , recounted in God's Smuggler,
has awed and inspired millions. This bestseller tells of
the young Dutch factory worker's incredible efforts to
transport Bibles across closed borders - and the
miraculous ways in which God provided for him every step
of the way. This story is reintroduced in a 35th
anniversary edition with a new foreword and afterword.
Brother Andrew's story remains as inspiring today as it
was thirty-five years ago, and with this new release it
will motivate a new generation to risk everything to
follow God's call.

| D. L. Moody |
Bailey, Faith Coxe |
D.L. Moody: Americas First Foreign Missionary |
| Here I Stand (Martin Luther) |
Bainton, Roland H. |
This is the first Luther biography I read. I have
read it several times since and referred to it as a
source. I like it better than other Luther biographies I
have read, even though some I know find fault with it. I
especially find helpful Bainton's explanation of how
Zwingli and the Anabaptists are indebted to the thought
of Plato for their non-sacramental position. I recommend
this volume to anyone who would like to understand the
contribution of Martin Luther to history and life today.

Boom, Corrie ten |
When the Nazis invaded Holland, Corrie ten Boom's

Corrie discovered how Jesus can turn loss to glory! This
unforgettable story will move you to tears and to joy. |
| Tramp For The Lord |
Boom, Corrie ten |
Looking into the cold, starry sky above
Ravensbruck---the Nazi death camp where she was held
prisoner---Corrie ten Boom was sustained by God's
overwhelming love. When released years later, she became
a "tramp for the Lord," traveling the world to share
God's love with others. Now she shares it with you. An
unforgettable blessing. |
| Prison Letters |
Boom, corrie ten |
Can faith survive, indeed thrive...in the brutal,
dehumanizing environment of a Nazi concentration camp?
Can God be gloriefied and His people blessed, even as
thousands of innocent sould are being herded to their
doom?
Yes, Jesus lives and He is Victor!
These words express the unshakeable Christian faith of
Corrie...a faith, which enabled this remarkable woman to
withstand the torture of a German death camp and to
praise God for the valuable spiritual lessones she
learned there...a faith which is echoed again and again
in the stirring letters she wrote while in prison. |
| The Hiding Place |
Boom, Corrie ten |
Description: When the Nazis invaded Holland, Corrie
ten Boom's quiet life turned into a nightmare. Because
she made her home a "hiding place" for Jews, she and her
family were sent to a concentration camp. Refusing to

| In My Fathers House |
Boom, Corrie ten |
Corrie ten Boom was fifty years old when she began
harboring Jews during World War II. She was imprisoned
in a concentration camp, and after her release she
traveled the world, proclaiming the gospel. What
happened in those earlier fifty years to prepare Corrie
for all that lay ahead?
In My Father's House (over 250,000 copies sold) explains
how God used life's small beginnings and everyday
happenings to prepare Corrie for the suffering and
victories to come. The eighth book of the Corrie ten
Boom Library, it is the first in the series to focus on
the years leading up to World War II and the events of
The Hiding Place. More than merely a collection of
memories from Corrie's colorful life, this book explores
the human side of one of the most authentic Christian
witnesses and the faith that kept her going strong.
|
| A Prisoner and Yet ... |
Boom, Corrie ten |
Raw and real, this direct translation from the
original Dutch is the work which served as the
foundation for the later book and subsequent movie "The
Hiding Place." It is excellent primary source material
for students of World War II and essential reading for
serious students of the Holocaust. Confessing Christians
and nonbelievers alike will be humbled as they view the
horrors of Ravensbruck through Corrie's witness. Her
testimony to the power of the love of Christ will touch
even the most callous hearts. |
| White Queen of the Cannibals |
Bueltmann, A. J. |
|
| The Small Woman |
Burgess, Alan |
This is a true story of an insignificant English
maiden who went to China to tell the Chinese people of
the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Alan Burgess weaves a
masterful tale, including harrowing escapes, a clash of
cultures and customs, extreme poverty and deprivation,
amidst an enchanting background of picturesque cities
tucked in the misty mountains of Northern China,
official Mandarins on palanquins, and the dusty mule
trails that tie it all together.
There is even a love story of Gladys and a Nationalist
army officer tucked in between the bombing of her town
and the marching of 100 children refugees over
treacherous mountains to Sian (Xian) in search of an
orphanage to care for them.
You'll not be able to put this book down, and you'll
laugh and cheer for the glorious work that God does
through this determined and hardy woman. |

| Terry Bradshaw, Man of Steel |
Diles, David |
If you are looking for lots of inside dirt on the
Steelers Super Bowl teams of the 1970s, this isn't the
book. Terry Bradshaw devotes more of the book to his
life off the field than on the field in this book,
although that is not really a bad thing. Bradshaw is an
interesting individual and a committed Christian, a
subject that is covered thoroughly in the book. At the
time of the book was written, the Steelers had won three
of their four Super Bowls. There is also commentary from
people like Chuck Knoll, Terry's college coaches, his
parents, former wife Jo Jo Starbuck, etc.

| A Passion For Souls |
Dorsett, Lyle W. |
I felt like I really got to know who D.L. Moody was
and what he set his heart on. His life was amazingly
full and he sought God's will in everything he did. Of
course, he was human and had his faults, which Dorsett
shows us, but God used even his failings for His own
glory. Truly a reflective, inspiring biography!

| Molder of Dreams |

to grow up in a town where the police are alerted to a
problem by a light on the water tower. A master story
weaver, Guy recounts growing up in the warmth of love
and freshly baked oatmeal revel cookies. |

| Escape In Iraq: The Thomas Hamill Story |
Hamill, Thomas |
This was a fantastic story from a dairy farmer who
went to Iraq as a contractor to make things better at
home. The story is a heartwarming one--about his family,
his wife, his love of God and his faith that carried him
through the frightening attack from terrorists on the
convoy that he was leading, through his capture and
24-day captivity in the hands of Iraqis. It was simply
written so that just about anyone could grasp what he
was going through; the visual imagery was just like some
of the books I read in childhood; I felt I was there
with him. I enjoyed his naming his captors, it made me
chuckle--that although he could lose his life at any
time, he was quietly taking note of things around him
and amusing himself; something his captors could never
take from him. They say freedom is an "inside job".
Thomas Hamill has that freedom. This is a remarkable
story of courage and faith. It also gave me an
interesting perspective on the Iraqi people since he
didn't stay in one place and met many of them. Some
interesting conversations went on about Saddam and Bush
and American culture versus Iraqi culture. I thought it
was intriguing and well worth the time. As a matter of
fact; I couldn't put it down.

Hitt, Russell T |
Irene Webster-Smith, an Irish woman, dedicated her
life to missionary work in Japan. First she ministered
to prostitutes and later began to adopt unwanted babies
and nurture them in the Christian faith. There is even
more but you need to read this book for yourself. Her
story is one to challenge and amaze the reader as you
see how she trusted God in the midst of great obstacles.
I was privileged to have met Sensei in her later years
and was duly impressed with her humility and willingness
to do anything the Lord wanted her to do. She became a
legend among the Japanese people in the greater Tokyo
area and greatly respected and loved by everyone who
knew her.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone who has a heart
for Christian missionary work.

| Amy Carmichael of Dohnavur |
Houghton, Frank |
This biography of an amazing woman of God is truly
food for the soul. In contrast the Elizabeth Elliot
biography "A chance to die" seems to have an unconscious
negative slant which detracts from this servant of God.
This woman was surrendered to the Lord more than anyone
else we know of in the 20th century except perhaps
Oswald Chambers. We should ask God that we might be used
by Him to just a fraction that "Amma" was. The work of
Dohnavur still continues to this day.

| A Generous Impulse |
Jenkins, Jerry B. |
During his sixteen years as president of Moody Bible
Institute of Chicago, Dr. George Sweeting looked like
someone the board put together from a kit, a godly man
beyond measure. Sweeting is a unique part of Moody's
history, being the only graduate to serve both as senior
pastor of Moody Church and as president and chancellor
of the Moody Bible Institute. Readers will be touched
and challenged by this remarkable story about a man
whose life has touched thousands.

Description: John Bunyan, the author of Pilgrim's

memoirs--Mary. Born blind in 1650, her story still
intrigues us nearly 350 years later. When her father was
imprisioned for unlawful preaching, it was 10-year-old
Mary who traveled the streets of Bedford each day,
bringing soup to her father in prison. Mary developed a
fierce determination for independence, after spending
years proving that she was not hindered by her
blindness. Only when she admited the she needed help did
she turn to the Lord; the Source of all strength.

| Andrew Murray (Men of Faith) |
Lindner, Jr. William |
The warmth of a deep relationship with God built on
the bedrock of Biblical truth.
Born in South Africa, Andrew Murray (1828-1917) was sent
to study in England at age 10. When he returned to South
Africa as a pastor and evangelist, he led a revival that
shook the country.
Murray's lifetime of work to deepen the spiritual life
of Christians has touched the church worldwide through
the legacy of his profound writings, including With
Christ in the School of Prayer, Abide in Christ, and
Raising Your Children for Christ. Less well-known is his
involvement in church/state relations, theological
debates, and the founding of universities. Murray's
solidly biblical theology and fiery spiritual life made
him a driving force behind the revivals of his day and a
model of faithfulness for ours.
Meet the man behind some of the most beloved devotional
classics of our times.

| A Man Called Peter |
Marshall, Catherine |
Catherine Marshall writes an interesting and
insightful biography of her late husband, Peter
Marshall. Peter Marshall was a poor Scottish immigrant
who came to the United States, worked at odd jobs to put
himself through the seminary, and eventually became such
a prominent minister that he was appointed Chaplain of
the United States Senate. The book also tells the story
of Peter and Catherine, and how their relationship
blossoms and grows, and is severely tested over the
years.

| David Livingstone |

David Livingstone: Missionary to Africa |
| Mary Slessor (Women of Faith) |
Miller, Basil |
The remarkable story of the courage and compassion
of a woman who dared to challenge a mission field that
had come to be known as "the white man's grave."
From earliest childhood in Dundee, Scotland, Mary
Slessor desired to carry the gospel to the unreached
people groups of West Africa. From the moment of her
arrival in 1876, she encountered and overcame both the
primitive hazards of pioneer missionary work and the
barbarous social practices of the tribes to whom she had
been sent.
In time churches were planted, schools were built and
medical help was made available. So thorough was Mary's
knowledge and understanding of the language and customs
that she was appointed vice-consul for the British
government in the region. Government authorities were
continually amazed at her godly influence in the lives
of the people she served.
The personal story of one of the greatest missionaries
of the past century.

| Mrs. Robert E. Lee: The Lady of Arlington |
Perry, John |
I always find it interesting to read about famous
people's lives, but especially about the people who have
been behind the scenes so to speak and little is told
about them. That is why I found this book so
interesting. Robert E. Lee is well known as the civil
war general who surrendered and the war ended, of
course, but to read more about his wife and get an
insight to his family life made it hard to put the book
down. There are some basic history rehashed somewhat in
this book, but over all I found the book very personable
and engaging in letting me know something about this
woman whom I had never really heard of before. It also
will show readers that no matter how famous a person may
be, all people have their troubles and sorrows- and a
lot of how life turns out to affect you depends on your
reaction to what has happened in one's life. If you
enjoy anything about the Civil War, this book would be a
definite must !

| The roots of endurance |
Piper, John |
John Piper produced another top-notch work. This
book is articulate, to the point, and easy to read. He
clearly did a tremendous amount of scholarly work in
writing this book. Very few works exist in Reformed
circles wherein non-theologians can read and understand
due to the concise nature of the writing. Piper did an
excellent job describing how these men dealt with
tremendous strife - and where the ability to do so
originated. These men understood God's grace... and that
is a point not lost, but rather promoted, by Piper. This
is another book I can highly recommend.
|
| The Hidden Smile of God |
Piper, John |
In our day of self-help and "feel good" religion
this may seem a strange book to many. Through the
looking glass of the lives of John Buyan, William
Cowper, and David Brainerd, John Piper reminds us of
something the Purtians called "The frowning providence
of God."
This is the second in a series of books called, The
Swans are Not Silent. Each book in this series takes a
theme and then examines that theme in the Scripture and
the lives of believers of the past. The theme of this
work is suffering and affliction.
As always, Piper stretches our faith well beyond the
normal comfort zones of evangelical thought. One can
feel hid sorrow as Buyan parted from his family to spend
12 years in prison. It was in that prison however, that
Pilrgims Progress was born. Piper carries us with
William Cowper into the darkness of an insane asylum
where in utter despair he finally found the grace and
mercy of God. From that darkness Cowper broke into
glorious light, writing that great hymn, There is a
Fountain Filled With Blood. We are transported back to
the apparent failure of David Brainerd as he was
expelled from Yale for questioning the salvation of an
instructor. We walk with Brainerd through his short
years as a missionary to the Indians. Piper reminds us
that none of us know what waves will spread out from a
pebble dropped into the ocean of God's will.
The Hidden Smile of God is the kind of book that you
won't put down once you open it. This is a much needed
book in our day. So-called Christian broadcasting is
beaming a message around the world of feel-good
easiness. It may be a hard word to embrace but it is
true. God's people are not spared from affliction and
trouble. They are brought through these things in the
grace and mercy of God.
|
| Contending for Our All |
Piper, John |
Each of these men stood for the truth of God’s Word
in the face of opposition—all out of a deep love for
Christ and a desire for people to know God in his
fullness. Popularity was not a concern, and they took no
joy in controversy for argument’s sake. However, these
men were willing to suffer for the sake of guarding the
sanctity of the gospel. Many threats, years of exile,
deaths of loved ones, opposition from friends and
authorities, sickness and pain—none of these setbacks
could keep these three from maintaining their efforts
for the furthering of Christ’s Kingdom or quench their
zeal for Christ himself.
In his fourth book of The Swans Are Not Silent series,
Contending for Our All, John Piper has given us
biographies of Athanasius, John Owen, and J. Gresham
Machen—bishop, pastor, and seminary founder. In the life
of each one, personal holiness was emphasized publicly
and privately despite suffering. They were true soldiers
for the sake of the cross, and each man offers life
lessons for Christians today.
Athanasius
The deity of Christ and all its worth consumed
Athanasius. He devoted his life to defending it. The
great adversary was the Arian heresy. Athanasius would
be banished by the emperor five times. He was contending
for his all—the essential, life-giving truth of Christ
and his gospel.
John Owen
Communion with Christ was the focus of John Owen’s vast
intellect and expansive heart. He battled
Christ-belittling errors of the mind and heart with
passion and skill. Going deeper in the understanding of
Christ was for him the key to going deeper in fellowship
with him.
J. Gresham Machen
Representing Christ in all his fullness with all of
Scripture drove J. Gresham Machen. He saw in the liberal
Christianity of the early twentieth century another
religion. His exposure of its subtleties and his
emphasis on the facts of history are astonishingly
relevant for our time in the early twenty-first century.
The Swans Are Not Silent
When Augustine handed over the leadership of his church
in A.D. 426, his successor was so overwhelmed by a sense
of inadequacy that he declared, "The swan is silent,"
fearing the spiritual giant’s voice would be lost to
time. But for 1,600 years Augustine has not been
silent—and neither have those who faithfully trumpeted
the cause of Christ after him. Their lives have inspired
every generation of believers and should compel us to a
greater passion for God.
|
| The Legacy of sovereign Joy |
Piper, John |
This insightful book lays historical foundations for
the philosophy of Christian Hedonism (Biblically known
simply as discipleship to Jesus Christ!) which John
Piper first outlined in his book Desiring God: The
Meditations of a Christian Hedonist.
These chapters on Augustine, Luther, and Calvin
(originally lectures delivered at the Bethlehem
Conference for Pastors) are thought-provoking,
heart-stirring mini-biographical studies aimed at
fanning the flames of God-centeredness in the lives of
Christians.
Piper beautifully develops the Augustinian understanding
of grace as "sovereign joy" which liberates us from the
power of sin, by showing how this dynamic worked to free
Augustine himself from the bondage of lust.
From Luther's life, Piper delves into the importance of
studying the Word of God even in the midst of suffering.
And with Calvin, we are told how devotion to the
exposition of Scripture is the means by which the
Majesty of God is revealed with life-transforming power.
Piper preserves the careful balance of admiring the
virtues of these men without condoning their flaws. He
gives insightful and objective reflection on Augustine's
sacramentalism, Luther's vulgarity, and Calvin's consent
to the barbarity of his violent age. But he doesn't let
these sad mistakes obstruct from view the important
contributions each of these men have made to the history
of the church.
I am glad that these studies are being published (this
is the first book of a series of such biographies). They
will prove helpful to both the serious student of
Christian History, as well as the average curious
reader.

| An Arrow Pointing to Heaven |
Smith, James Bryan |
Description: Rich Mullins rose to fame and fortune
in the music industry and then gave it all away to live
in obscurity among Native Americans on a reservation in
New Mexico, teaching children the joy of music and the
hope of the gospel. Then his life, so full of promise,
came toa tragic end in an auto accident. During his
life, Mullins challenged the sensibilities of what it
means to follow Jesus in today's world, and now in his
death, he challenges all to build upon his legacy of
joy, compassion, brokenness, unblinking honesty, and
wonder in an Awesome God. |
| If God Should Choose |
Stagg, Kristen |
Description: On April 20, 2001, the plane carrying
missionaries Jim and Roni Bowers and their children was
shot down over Peru. Roni and 7-month-old Charity were
killed. Jim and 7-year-old Cory survived. Intensely
personal. Tragic. And yet uplifting. Told skillfully by
mission colleague Kristen Stagg, this is the authorized
account of what happened, including how the Bowers came
to the rain forest of Peru in the first place. It is a
tale of life - and death. As you read the story of these
missionaries who were faithful when facing death and
overwhelming grief, you'll see how God can use personal
tragedy to bring the message of His love to a watching
world. |
| John Newton: The Angry Sailor |
Strom, Ray Marshall |
This is one terrific book! Kay Strom has packed in
so much information and excitement, it's hard to believe
it's a book primarily written for kids and teens. She
combines dialogue, action, and narrative into a
fast-paced story that readers of all ages can enjoy. She
also uses comtemporary American English to avoid bogging
down in archaic terms and expressions. Now, all I knew
of John Newton before reading her book was that he
composed "Amazing Grace." I had no idea he'd been a
slave ship captain in his early "lost" years, nor that
the harshness and deprivation of his early life was
crucial to his coming to belief in later life. Reading
of the desperate straits he endured, and the miserable
deeds he sometimes committed because of them, gives a
whole new meaning to the lines from the hymn which go,
"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch
like me. I once was lost, but now am found, was blind,
but now I see." This epitomizes the entire story, but an
interested reader would still want to glean every detail
Ms. Strom has so thrillingly and believably captured in
just 125 pages. This is a story the entire family can
enjoy.

| Amazing Love |
Ten Boom, Corrie |
This is a daily devotional by Corrie Ten Boom that
has been sitting in my library all my life. My copy is
tattered. Everytime I need to reach for moral courage,
integrity, kindness, endurance and empathy, I turn to
this 'little' book.
This particular order was for 10 men that I know through
a prison ministry who are living in very difficult
situations for long periods of their lives. If you need
to learn forgiveness, try reading"The Hiding Place."
Only the spirit could work through a person to forgive
the people she encountered during her stay in a Nazi
concentration camp......and forgive...she did!!!!!

| A Prisoner and Yet |
Ten Boom, Corrie |
Raw and real, this direct translation from the
original Dutch is the work which served as the
foundation for the later book and subsequent movie "The
Hiding Place." It is excellent primary source material
for students of World War II and essential reading for
serious students of the Holocaust. Confessing Christians
and nonbelievers alike will be humbled as they view the
horrors of Ravensbruck through Corrie's witness. Her
testimony to the power of the love of Christ will touch
even the most callous hearts.

| At Least We Were Married |
Thomas, Terry C. |
I first read this book in the early 70's but just
recently read it again. It is a book that I certainly
want to keep in our library. This shows just how special
the marriage relationship is in God's eyes. This is a
story of a couple who were "sold out for Jesus" and also
shows how God works in our everyday lives. God blesses
those who keep themselves pure until marriage. I have
often wondered where and how God was using Terry in
building up His kingdom since the accident.

| David Brainerd |
Thornbury, John |
David Brainerd (1718-1747) gave his very life for
the good news of Jesus Christ, battling grave illness
and bitter opposition in living out his insatiable
passion to serve and glorify God.

| Dorie |
Van Stone, Doris |
This book is reveting! Doris VanStone really takes
you into her life and makes you feel the victimization
in your soul. Great example of how God can help victims
overcome the post-traumatic stress that is very real in
their conscious and unconscious mind.
