Thumbelina |
K-Gr. 2. Hans Christian Andersen's tale of a thumb-size girl forcibly betrothed to a series of forest creatures is strange, vaguely sinister, and perennially fascinating, and Sneed's interpretation reflects all these qualities. His text cleaves closely to the original, tracing Thumbelina's journey from the clutches of a calculating mother toad, a greedy beetle, a demanding mouse, and a mole with marriage on the mind. His dramatic watercolors don't sweep the story's cautionary aspects under the rug; the slightly distorted compositions and striking chiaroscuro effects amplify the threats Thumbelina encounters and deepen the relief when the happy ending arrives. Point out the lighthearted portrait of Andersen on the last page; children will be amused by the emphasis Sneed places on the storyteller's famously large nose. Pair this with Brian Pinkney's recent version [BKL O 1 03], featuring sunnier art and an African American Thumbelina, to discuss the range of interpretations that can spring from a single evocative source |

Let's Talk About Being Selfish |
This children's book by Joy Berry is short, to the point and has excellent comic book type illustrations that will catch any toddler's eye. The book opens with little blond and very selfish Katie not wanting to share her toys with red-headed Sam. Your toddler will learn right off the bat that other children do not like playing with selfish kids, because selfish kids care more about themselves than they do others.
You'll be asking your toddler as you read along how he or she feels and thinks about selfish children. Do they feel left out? Do they feel angry? Your toddler will get the picture pretty fast that selfish is just not the way to be.
And to reinforce the don't be selfish theme, the second half of the books shows Sam playing with his new friend, Tami. Unlike Katie, Sam is not selfish and he and Tami enjoy themselves playing while Katie is obviously left out, because nobody like a selfish little girl, or boy.
Ms. Berry's books are all delightful and it's a puzzle to me why they are so hard to get. One would think that this is the kind of book every toddler should grow up with. I'm glad I have them and my son Devon is too.

The Story of Johah - Alice in Bibleland |
This book is outstanding! My 2 toddlers love to hear this one at bedtime. It gives us such a wonderful opportunity to talk on their level about how God requires obedience, but forgives us and still loves us when we don't listen if we say we are sorry. Like someone else mentioned in their review, I'm online today to order several more of these stories for the kids' Easter baskets. The rhyme of the story does not distract from the message, which is great! The illustrations are perfectly suited for a child's imagination. Quit reading reviews and BUY the books- you won't regret it.

Buginnings Colors - Hermie & Friends |
Hermie is tired of being a plain ol' green caterpillar. So he sets out on a search to "help" God find the perfect color. Hermie recruits Wormie to help him in his mission, and their usual caterpillar antics ensue as Hermie and a reluctant Wormie search God's creation for the perfect caterpillar color. Could it be yellow? No, definitely red. Purple is nice, too. . . . But in the end, they find that green was truly one of the special colors in God's palette. With whimsical text and colorful 3-D illustrations, Colors will be a delightful lesson, as well as a helpful reminder that God made us special just the way we are. |

You Are Mine |
Max was interested in helping children understand their value-not from the world's perspective, but from God's. Wemmicksville is a land created by Eli, the "God" figure of the story. He creates each Wemmick in Wemmicksville uniquely, each with its own look and personality. Each story and video is a new adventure with the citizens of Wemmicksville. Punchinello is the central character, along with his friends Lucia, Splint, and Chip. When Punchinello strays from Eli, he begins to have problems. Only when Punchinello stays close to Eli does he clearly see how to walk through his life in Wemmicksville.
In this board book, Punchinello learns that it's not what you have that counts, but who you are.

Punchinello and the Most Marvelous Gift |

Violet is putting the finishing touches on her mountainous bouquet. Lucia is warming up for her solo, featuring the amazing Dr. Marvel and his Marvellaphony-organoni. And Punchinello is just baffled. He has nothing that would even compare to their fabulous creations, and especially nothing wonderful enough to honor Eli on Maker Day. Yet, in the midst of the celebration, something goes terribly awry and Punchinello comes to the rescue with the most precious gift of all-a gift from the hearts of all Wemmicks to honor the Maker on his special day.
Children will learn a little lesson about healthy competition and the value of a gift from the heart in this oversized board book from the Wemmicks series.

It's Christmastime in the garden and Hermie and his friends are hustling and bustling to prepare for the big day. But more than anything, they all eagerly anticipate the crowning moment of the holiday season: the arrival of Grannypillar's scrumptious fruitcake. Suddenly Christmas is hijacked when Iggy and Ziggy Cockroach - the meanest, greediest bugs in the garden - steal Grannypillar's fruitcake. How will Christmas survive?! But deep in the hearts of the garden's youngest, the true meaning of Christmas shines. Hailey and Bailey, through an act of unheard generosity, together remind the garden that the celebration of Christmas is nothing about fruitcake, but about God's gift to us all, through His Son, Jesus. |

Small Gifts in God's Hands |
Ages 5-8. A young boy, Elijah, meets Jesus and rushes home to tell his mother, expressing his desire to give Jesus a gift. He looks around at their meager possessions, but nothing seems suitable. His mother reassures him that Jesus won't care about the size of the gift. During the week Elijah hears about gifts people give to Jesus: they lend him their home so he can preach, they provide him with a meal. But Elijah has nothing. One day he and his mother go to hear Jesus teach. A large crowd has gathered, and soon everyone is hungry and tired. Elijah and his mother have brought only enough food for themselves, but they offer Jesus what they have. Of course, it is with their small offering that Jesus feeds the thousands on the hillside. Bladholm's realistic illustrations convey the powerful message that no gift is too small for God. Shelley Townsend Hudson |

Buginnings, Numbers - Hermie & Friends |
To compensate for his perceived commonness, Hermie decides he needs to have more stuff than anyone in the garden. With Wormie in tow, Hermie sets out through the garden gathering daisies, acorns, rocks-anything he can add to his collection of assets. But when the weight becomes too much to bear, Hermie learns that the most priceless things aren't 'things' at all-they're his friends. |
| Lucado, Max |
Buginnings ABC's - Hermie & Friends |
In Letters, you'll have front row seats to the opening night of "The Alphabet Garden," a special production by Hermie and his friends, featuring the letters A to Z. Of course, opening night rarely goes over without a hitch, and the mishaps will have children rolling in the aisles while learning all 26 letters of the alphabet. Behind the scenes, Hermie learns the important lesson that being in the spotlight doesn't necessarily make you the star of the show. |
| Lucado, Max |
Buginnings Shapes - Hermie & Friends |
Hermie has invited Wormie over to play his new board game, "Get into Shapes." With a flick of the spinner, Hermie and Wormie are literally bending over backwards to do their best caterpillar impressions of the shape that the arrow lands on. The tumbling, bumbling caterpillars attract the attention of the other garden inhabitants, and soon, the whole group of insects is 'getting into shapes.' Antonio Ant lends his sectional body to create a perfect triangle; Lucy Ladybug's wing forms an exact semicircle, and Schneider the Snail has to expend little effort to exhibit a circle. Children will laugh and learn as the caterpillar crew teaches them to identify circles, squares, triangles, and other shapes-with an underlying message of using individual strengths toward a team effort. |

Jesus Makes Me Happy |
This is truly a beautiful book for children and adults alike. Each page tells a special story about Jesus beginning when He was a baby and continues on. Each story is accompanied with a tender illustration of Jesus interacting with people. Colorful and real to life, the illustrations are outstanding and coincide wonderful with the stories.
All in all this little book is a winner and a very special read for parents to share with their little ones.

Sometimes I Get Scared |
I'd never heard of this author before I picked up a copy of "Sometimes I Get Scared" at a library book sale. Now I'm planning to collect the series for my four year old son. Psalm 23 is expressed through the voice of a young child speaking to God. The language is accessible for children without talking down to them. The illustrations are intricately detailed, with color used sparingly to convey meaning. It's a simple, tender book with a loving message.

The Story of Valentine's Day |
In only 200 words, author Skarmeas tells the story of how Valentine's Day came into being. In simple words that every child can understand, here is the story of the kindly Valentine who cared for the children of Rome, who prayed for a miracle for a blind child, and who is remembered each February 14. Artist Pickett has painted the scenes in bright colors from the schoolroom scenes to those of ancient Rome. This book is unusual in that it briefly explains the history of a holiday to toddlers.

Not only do I get the pleasure of sharing this artistically creative book with my little girl, who shares a special bond with it because we read it togrther; also I throughly enjoy it myself. The illustrations are outstanding, and the text is fun, to the point, creative, and you never tire of it. My little girl is 4 years old and we will probably enjoy this book for many years. If you have a child whom you want to share the word of God with, this book is a must.
