The Treasure Principle Alcon, Randy Flip-Flop Your Concept of Giving! Bestselling author Randy Alcorn introduced readers to a revolution in material freedom and radical generosity with the release of the original The Treasure Principle in 2001. Now the revision to the compact, perennial bestseller includes a provocative new concluding chapter depicting God asking a believer questions about his stewardship over material resources. Readers are moved from the realms of thoughtful Bible exposition into the highly personal arena of everyday life. Because when Jesus told His followers to "lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven," He intended that they discover an astounding secret: how joyful giving brings God maximum glory and His children maximum pleasure.

The Cost of Discipleship Bonhoeffer, Dietrich The Cost of Discipleship compels the reader to face himself and God in any situation. Bonhoffer speaks of "Cheap Grace", grace from preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, communion without confession. "Cheap Grace" is grace without discipleship. "Costly Grace" is the gospel which must be sought again and again, the gift which must be asked for, the door at which a man must knock. "It's costly because it costs a man his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the only true life."
Each New Day Boom, Corrie ten Corrie ten Boom knew that she'd find daily help in Scripture---no matter what she was going through! Based on incidents from her life, these 365 uplifting devotions will remind you of the Christian's victory over sin, Satan, and death; of God's wonderful promises; and that the present and future are in his hands.
Purpose in Prayer Bounds, E. M. Jesus said, "If ye shall ask anything in my name, that will I do."
"That," says E.M. Bounds, "is the Divine declaration, and it opens a vista of infinite resources and possibility." Throughout his ministry, Bounds rose to pray at 4 a.m. and prayed until 7 a.m. Out of this deep prayer experience, he could say, "Without prayer the Christian life, robbed of its sweetness and beauty, becomes cold and formal, and dead; but in the secret place where God talks with His own, the Christian life grows into such a testimony of Divine power that all men will feel its influence and be touched by the warmth of its love . . . That, surely is the purpose of all real prayer and the end of all true service."
Power Through Prayer Bounds, E. M. Do you want to pray with power? Are you experiencing the abundant life? You can discover how effective prayers will transform you into a dynamic Christian with a deeper understanding of the Word. Personal and direct communication with God will revitalize and invigorate you. If you make prayer a key factor in your life, you will know the fullness of divine power. EM Bounds wrote this book for Christians who want to be mighty prayer-warriors. Here's how you can have power through prayer!
The Discipline of Grace Bridges, Jerry The pursuit of holiness may mean legalism and manmade rules to some; others believe that the grace of God opens the door to irresponsibility. In this sequel to The Pursuit of Holiness, Bridges shows how the two are anchored together. Through discipline we preach the gospel to ourselves, allowing us to be taught by the same grace through which we are saved.
The Discipline of Grace Bridges, Jerry Bible teacher Bridges here invites Christian believers who are pursuing holiness to pause for a moment to consider the role of God's grace in making such pursuit possible. Bridges urges the discernment of grace and the subsequent practice of the disciplines of commitment, conviction, choices, watching, and adversity. Bridges's Bible-centered devotions will appeal most to evangelical Christians seeking renewal of their faith. Recommended for most public libraries.

What Works When Life Doesn't Briscoe, Stuart

My Utmost for His Highest Chambers, Oswald Oswald Chambers, a Scotsman who converted to Christianity in his teens under the ministry of Charles Spurgeon, has been affecting Christians with his devotional words since My Utmost for His Highest was first published in 1935. This acknowledged classic contains 365 daily readings that take heady doctrine and make it practical, realistic, and intensely personal. With humor and humility, Chambers speaks plainly to the common man struggling with devotion to Christ in daily living. Worldly cares and self-serving desires begin to lose their appeal as Chambers aides the reader in transforming his mind by viewing life through the instruction of God's Word. Richard Halverson, former chaplain of the United States Senate, attests to this: "no book except the Bible has influenced my walk with Christ at such deep maturing levels." This is Chambers's chief desire, directing the reader to "shut out every other consideration and keep yourself before God for this one thing only--My Utmost for His Highest... determined to be absolutely and entirely for Him and for Him alone."

The Cross Centered Life Mahaney C J Remember Jesus Christ? Although it seems almost too obvious, the center of our faith is surprisingly easy to forget. Dynamic pastor C.J. Mahaney shows how to overcome our tendency to move on from the gospel of grace. Finding joy in the gospel -- whose promises allow us to escape condemnation whenever it attacks -- helps us avoid the prevalent trap of legalism. With practical suggestions, Mahaney demonstrates the difference between knowing the gospel... and making it the main thing in daily decisions and daily living.
Screwtape Writes Again Martin, Walter think everyone should have to read this book (and also C.S. Lewis's)! The author helps us to understand how Satan operates. I guarantee that everyone will say "Aha!" and see a little (or alot) of themselves in it. Instead of writing a boring nonfiction book about sin, the author presents Christian beliefs and principles in such a way that you can easily grasp the point.

Everyday Guide to Prayer Murray, Andrew The Everyday Guide to Prayer takes away the complex, confusing notions of what prayer should be, offering instead an understandable thirty-one-day guide to true communication with God. A section of "prayer starters" follows, to help you begin your conversation with God on any number of real life issues.

Give prayer a chance, and you'll find that it becomes a vital part of your everyday life. Want to know how to pray? You need The Everyday Guide to Prayer.
Abide in Christ Murry, Andrew So many Christians, instead of accepting God's invitation to enter His throne room, stand alone outside the door, uncertain and ashamed. Christ beckons them to His banqueting table and offers them a room in His house, but they foolishly give up the glory of the life He as offered. They come to Jesus as Redeemer but never go beyond the doorway to abide in Him and experience the unspeakable joy of dwelling with the King of Kings. Andrew Murray knew what it meant to be continually in the Father's presence. Read these thirty-one heart-searching readings and learn how to live daily in closer communion and fellowship with Him. Accept God's invitation and live in His blessing and glory instead of shuffling your feet at the gate.
With Christ in the School of Prayer Murry, Andrew One of the best-loved prayer classics of all time. Using Jesus' teaching on prayer as a model, Murray begins at the elementary level and then leads you step-by-step deeper into bold, believing prayer. In 31 lessons, Murray offers powerful teaching designed to lead us to a life of prayer.

31 Days of Praise Myers, Ruth Christians who long to experience God in a fresh, deep way will treasure this powerful, personal praise guide, rereleased with an updated cover. Every day for just one month, a Scripture-based devotion cultivates the "heart habit" of praise and worship. Readers will be gently inspired to appreciate and adore the Lord in all things -- yes, even in the midst of pain, disappointment, and heartache. A deeper intimacy with God -- and a greater love for Him -- is the sure result.
The Normal Christian Life Nee, Watchman The Normal Christian Life is Watchman Nee's great Christian classic unfolding the path of faith and presenting the eternal purposes of God in simple terms. Watchman Nee (1903 - 1972) is remembered for his leadership of an indigenous church movement in China as well as for the books that continue to enrich Christians throughout the world. Beginning in the 1930s, he helped establish local churches in China that were completely independent of foreign missionary organizations and were used to bring many into the kingdom of God.

Let Us Pray Nee, Watchman Reviewer: Paul West "Pablo" (San Marcos, Texas) s
Watchman Nee spent much of his life in prison for preaching Jesus Christ in China. This was back around the early 1900's, when gospel resistance was exceedingly fierce for missionaries in Asia. His books and teachings were written mostly behind bars, under the oppression of his communist jailers. God was with him in prison, though, and rewarded his faithfulness by allowing him to lead several prison guards to Christ before he died.

All Nee's books were originally written in Chinese, and they have a certain insight into Christ that I have found unique. This man knew God, there is no doubt. He was intimate with the Holy Spirit, and God gave him revelation in prayer. To Nee, prayer is simply aligning your will with God's will.

Of course, prayer is anything but simple. Prayer is often painful and taxing. What Nee does is lay down the basic rudiments for effective prayer: 1) Praying in God's will, birthed from the desire to know the heart of God on any given subject, and 2) Perseverence in prayer, or more specifically, praying until the burden is lifted.

The second half of the book offers a teaching on Satan's tactics to disrupt the prayer life of a saint, and how to pray effectively in a group meeting. Really good stuff, I think. Books like these are good to have, keeping parts highlighted for quick access when your spirit starts to ebb. Prayer is the most important part of the Christian's walk, the part Satan attacks the most, and it is wise to read as much as we can by men who have excelled in it.

The Dangerous Duty of Delight Piper, John This compact 96-page book, drawn from Piper's popular Desiring God, emphasizes the importance of strengthening our relationship with our Creator by enjoying Him and His creation. The author's now classic ideas are presented here in an accessible size that will allow readers to absorb and apply them quickly -- leading them to a dramatically different and joyful experience of their faith. Filled with biblical reasons for living a life of celebration, this life-changing read helps people discover not only why but how to delight more fully in the Lord.
The Passion of Jesus Christ Piper, John Denying that Christ suffered and died is like denying the Holocaust. For some it is simply too horrific to affirm. Others suspect it is an elaborate religious conspiracy to coerce sympathy. Those who deny either event live in a historical dreamworld. Jesus suffered unspeakably and died.

The Passion of Jesus Christ shows that the gore of Christ's suffering is turned to glory by the enormity and diversity of what his death achieved. To do this, John Piper uncovers fifty accomplishments of Christ's suffering. He shuns embellishment and shows from the Bible key evidence for each outcome of Christ's death.

When it is all said and done, the most crucial question is: Why? Why did Christ suffer and die? The answer has everything to do with you.

Incredible, challenging read, September 2, 2003
Reviewer: Philip Fung "Always trying to read more" (Houston, TX) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I agree with the gist of the other reviewers.

I would also like to add that this book is probably a bit more hard hitting than his other stuff. He comes right out and calls people to bigger and better things. I can imagine some people actually being offended by some things that he says - that simply going to work and raising your kids aren't all that God has called you to. There's a great calling to consider cross-cultural missions work. :) He says things like:

"Oh, how many lives are wasted by people who believe that the Christian life means simply avoiding badness and providing for the family. So there is no adultery, no stealing, no killing, no embezzlement, no fraud - just lots of hard work during the day, and lots of TV and PG-13 videos in the evening (during quality family time), and lots of fun stuf on the weekend - woven around church (mostly). This is life for millions of people. Wasted life. We were created for more."

and

"God does not promise enough food for comfort or for life - he promises enough so that you can trust him and do his will."

All in all, it's a great book, and a little more application than Desiring God. A little easier read, in that it's not as theologically heavy, I think. Definitely quality

How good is good Enough Stanley, Andy Surely there's more than one way to get to heaven? Bestselling author Andy Stanley addresses this popular belief held even among Christians. Each New Day ten Book, Corrie Each New Day is a collection of short yet profound devotions for every day of the year from the heart of Corrie ten Boom. Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life Whitney, Donals Freedom. The Reward Of Discipline.

It's not uncommon for an accomplished musician to be able to sit down in front of a new piece of music and play it through without a hitch. To make it seem easy, as if it required no effort. Yet, the "freedom" to play with such skills comes only after years of disciplined practice.

In the same way, the freedom to grow in godliness-to naturally express Christ's character through your own personality-is in large part dependent on a deliberate cultivation of the spiritual disciplines.

Far from being legalistic, restrictive, or binding, as they are often perceived, the spiritual disciplines are actually the means to unparalleled spiritual liberty.

So if you'd like to embark on a lifelong quest for godliness, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life will help you on your way. Drawn from a rich heritage left us by the early church fathers, the Puritan writers, and Jesus Christ Himself, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life will guide you through a carefully selected array of disciplines including Scripture reading, prayer, worship, Scripture meditation, evangelism, serving, stewardship, Scripture application, fasting, silence and solitude, journaling, and learning.

By illustrating why the disciplines are important, showing how each one will help you grown in godliness, and offering practical suggestions for cultivating them on a long-term basis, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life will provide you with a refreshing opportunity to embrace life's greatest pursuit-the pursuit of holiness-through a lifelong delight in the disciplines.
