SUMMARY |
| Bruce Olson, Missionary or Colonizer |
Andres, Kung |
One of the most challenging pieces on a missionary!,
August 9, 1999
Reviewer: A reader
"Bruce Olson [author of "Bruchko", Creation House, Lake
Mary, FL.] is one of the most challenging pieces on a
missionary loner in our time. The character of Bruce
Olson is finally vindicated but much more than that
comes out. Here is an accurate, colorful profile of an
Indian tribe in Colombia caught against the background
of pressures that almost destroyed them. A missionary
classic, must reading for anyone concerned with the true
method of carrying the compassion of God to a needy
people." -James L. Johnson, President of Evangelical
Literature Overseas

| In The Gap |
Bryant, Davis |
David Bryant's expression, "standing in the gap," is
a useful way to describe the mission to which all
Christians are called. There is a chasm caused by sin
and moral failure which separates each human being from
God and His heaven. Only Christ has the power to bridge
that gap, and he has called believers to serve with him
in that gap between humanity and God.
Bryant challenges every Christian to answer two
questions: "Will I stand in the gap? and "In what part
of the gap will I stand?" God's sovereignty ultimately
determines how the answer to those two questions will be
acted out in each believer's life.
As Bryant states, "To stand in the Gap means to place no
limits on how fully God may use you, or for whose sake."
Bryant further points to the fact that Christians need a
cause, the cause of world missions, to energize their
spiritual lives. By the author's estimates, of the three
billion non-Christians in the world, at least 2 1/2
billion are hidden people. By this, he means that they
are part of a people group for which no missionaries or
churches currently exist.
To meet this need, Bryant calls for the reader to turn
to prayer as the foundation of all outreach to the
nations of the world.
He states, "By prayer we establish a beachhead for the
Kingdom among people where it has never been before.
Prayer strikes the winning blow. All other missionary
efforts simply gather up the fruits of our praying."

| Is That Really You God? |
Cunningham, Loren & Rogers, Janice |
Loren Cunningham's dream began with a vision-waves
of young people moving out across the continent
announcing the Good News of Jesus Christ to the whole
earth. Decades later, Loren's vision has grown into an
interdenominational movement of Christians from around
the world who are dedicated to presenting the Gospel to
this generation. How did God move Loren's dream from
vision to reality? He led Loren and his wife, Darlene,
through a series of tough lessons in guidance. The
exciting story of Youth With A Mission has much to teach
us about the art of listening to God as we seek to be
used by Him. Is That Really You, God? is not only a
practical guide to hearing God's voice but also an
amazing testimony to how following His direction can
impact our lives and our world for the glory of God's
kingdom. |
| Torches of Joy |
Dekker, John & Neely, Lois |
In 1960 the twenty-five thousand Dani tribespeople
hidden away in the remote Toli Valley of Irian Jaya used
only stone tools and had no written language. Then, in
one generation, they took the always dangerous,
sometimes fatal, leap from the Stone Age into the
twentieth century. |

| The Bamboo Cross |
Dowdy, Homer E. |
Very readable and thrilling account of God moving in
Vietnam, January 3, 2002
Reviewer: Erkki Salo (Tampere, Finland)
Even though I read the Finnish translation of Dowdy's
book, I am quite sure the English original can't be any
worse... and this book is a really good account of how
the zeal for Christ of a handful of people in the
1940-60s turned into a harvest of thousands...
The book is also very well put together... it is like a
best selling thriller, with the added benefit that it is
true and many people received Christ...

| Christ's Witchdoctor - From Savage Sorcerer to
Jungle Missionary |
Dowdy, Homer &E. |
I read this book during the summer of 1982. It was
part of the lending library of a church near Des Moines,
Iowa.
I read many biographies during this period of my life.
This book ranks near Brother Andrew's " God's Smuggler "
and Corrie Ten Booms " The Hiding Place " as challenging
and entertaining stories of Christian lives.

| Jonathan Goforth |
goforth, rosalind |
The remarkable story of a man whose influence is
still felt in China today.
After conversion to Christ as a young man, Jonathan
Goforth eventually arrived in China with his wife
Rosalind. They endured incredible hardships, including
the loss of their first child to malaria. They fled for
their lives from the Boxer Rebellion. Deeply inspired by
a reading of Finney's Revival Lectures, Goforth set out
with renewed determination and faith to spearhead a
revival which rarely has been equaled in the history of
modern missions.
Goforth's amazing spiritual journey from political
ambition to missionary revivalist in China.

| Give Up Your Small Ambitions |
Griffiths, Michael C |
|
| Don't Let the Goats Eat the Loquat Trees |
Hale, Thomas |
I love the book from the start and I have bought it
for many friends since my first reading 7 years ago. I
love the candid portray of faith and the author's
struggles of finding ways to introducing God to the
Nepalese who were not introduced to the concept of mercy
and unconditional love in Budhism. And above all, the
author has a great sense of humor and, his faith in God
is an inspiration to all. A refreshing reading for all.

Dave Howard's book "What makes a missionary" is

wealth of knowledge of missions and the Bible.

| the Night the Giant rolled Over |
Jenkins, Jerry |
|
| Tomorrow You Die |
Joly, Reona Peterson |
Reona Peterson Joly and Evey Muggleton Heckman never
dreamed of the adventure and danger that lay before them
as they attended a short-term missions school in
Switzerland. Then, as the two young women sought God,
they began to sense a burden for the mysterious,
isolated nation of Albania - a nation unlike any other.
In the 1970s Albania's leaders boasted that theirs was
the only completely atheistic nation in the world.
Closed to almost all outsiders, Albania particularly
wanted no contact with Christians. Preaching the gospel
in this communist country was punishable by death.
Willing participants in God's plan, yet unsure of how He
would lift their burden, Reona and Evey took the first
small steps of faith. Through a miraculous set of
events, the two young believers were drawn into the
danger and intrigue of being God's undercover agents in
a nation that officially despised Him. |

| In the Arena |
Kuhn, Isobel |
In the Arena continues the story of Isobel Kuhn.

in the arena. Isobel was convinced that the trials of
her life are "arena experiences" and her most valuable
lessons.

| By Searching |
Kuhn, Isobel |
I read this superb book just about two weeks ago
from today. It is the well written and inspiring story
about a young college student in Vancouver, Canada---of
how her professor has vowed that his students will leave
his class atheists, and how he made her feel like she
was stupid to believe in Creation "just because your
parents do". Isobel Kuhn decided that she would not
believe something -- "just because her parents did",
and, although not an atheist, became an antagonist. In
"By Searching", she tells of her life through college on
"The Misty Flats", and how God brought her back to
himself. She still was a very immature Christian, and
this book also tells how she grew. . .how she trusted
God to provide for her during her years at Moody, and
then--as soon as the Boxer rebellion was over she went
to China to serve Jesus among the Lisu of the
South-west.

| Let the Nations be Glad! |
Piper, John M. |
Why do we do missions? We are told, by Jesus, to
preach the gospel and make disciples of all nations. So
missions is duty, right? Wrong. If you do missions
purely from a sense of duty you will not honor those you
are reaching out to, nor will you truly honor God. Duty
is the wrong place to look, so where do we find the
answer to why we do missions? We turn, according to John
Piper, to worship. |

| Peace Child |
Richardson, Don |
When missionaries Don and Carol Richardson searched
for the key that would open the gospel to the Sawi, a
headhunting group of people from Irian Jaya, God moved
in a stunning way. He revealed His true Peace Child--the
ideal fulfillment of the Sawi's own redemptive analogy.
Peace Child chronicles the agony--and the triumph--of
the Richardsons' unforgettable sojourn among this people
loved by God. |

little island in vanuatu which is home to an an amazing
tribe of people. He tells the true story of a young
man's struggle to come to grips with the reality of God,
and the blessings that come from obedience to God.

| End of the Spear |
Saint, Steve |
i was surprised that being a christian, no one has
ever told me the story of the five missionary men slain
by the waodani tribe, so when i heard about this book
through an interview with the author steve saint i got
straight on to amazon and grabbed a copy. i loved the
story based on the son (the author)of one of the men
killed in the jungle, and his life and forgiveness of
the men who killed his dad. this is an amazing story,
which will challenge the way we live in the modern,
complicated world, when the language, and path of god is
so simple and with in reach of the most unsophisticated
people.

| From Jerusalem to Irian Jaya |
Tucker, Ruth A. |
From Jerusalem to Irian Jaya helps readers
understand the life and role of a missionary through
real life examples of missionaries throughout history.
We see these men and women as fallible and human in
their failures as well as their successes. These great
leaders of missions are presented as real people, and
not super-saints. This second edition covers all 2,000
years of mission history with a special emphasis on the
modern era, including chapters focused on the Muslim
world, Third World missions, and a comparison of
missions in Korea and Japan. It also includes both a
general and an "illustration" index where readers can
easily locate particular missionaries, stories, or
incidents. New design graphics, photographs, and maps
help make this a compelling book. |
| No Turning Back |
Verwer, George |
Renowned leader Verwer (OM) challenges us to
effective service for the Lord and helps us live a life
worthy of the calling.
|
| Defeat of the Bird God |
Wagner, C. Peter |
I am an avid reader of both Secular and Christian
fiction, and of Christian non-fiction and I thoroughly
enjoyed this book. I couldn't wait to sit down and read
it again. Not only was it written extremely well, but it
also keeps your attention because of the shocking way
that people of the jungle in Bolivia lived. There are
miracles abounding in this book, and I found it a great
strength of encouragement in my daily walk with God. You
see through this book how satan can reign when there is
no real knowledge of God, so thankfully missionary's are
willing to risk their lives and the comfort of home to
reach these lost tribes!

Cross and the Switchblade is the amazing true story of
how, prompted by the Holy Spirit, he began an out-reach
to teenagers ensnared by drugs and violent gangs. The
inspiring book has sold more than 14 million copies and
has been translated into 35 languages. |
