I have always loved the Christian missionary stories that Janet and Geoff put out. They give me something entertaining and spiritually challenging to read. Although they do seem to speed really quickly through the life of this man and others, it is understandable that they have a max page that they probably don't want to go past. Anyways, it really is neat reading these books.

John Wycliffe - Heroes of the Faith |
John Wycliffe (1330-1384)was a herald of the Reformation to come. More than a century before Martin Luther, John Calvin, and other reformers began the great movement that changed Western history, Wycliffe was boldly questioning the authority of the pope and the Roman Catholic Church. Wycliffe urged a personal, inward religion as opposed to the formal religion of his time. A prolific writer, Wycliffe issued the first English translatin of the Bible- -and more than six hundred years later, his name is synonymous with Bible translation.

The Chimney Sweep's Ransom - Trailblazer Books |
Thrilling adventure stories introducing young readers (ages 8-12) to Christian heroes of the past.
Ned Carter, an eighteenth-century boy of thirteen, has been working in the dangerous coal mines in northern England since he was five. He desperately wants to save his little brother Pip from the same fate. Like so many poor English families of the day, even the young children of the Carter family must earn money to pay the bills. Now Pip is turning five and Ned must find a way to prevent his parents from sending Pip into the coal mines.
But when Ned has an accident, Pip's fate seems sealed without Ned's income, his father is sure to act. But instead of the mines, little Pip is "sold" to be trained as a chimney sweep. Before Ned can intervene, Pip has vanished forever!
Despite his injury, Ned determines he must find Pip and try to buy him back. But where has Pip been taken and how can Ned ever earn the ransom money without his father knowing it? What might the preacher, John Wesley, do on Pip's behalf?
Was no one there to care or to help?

Attack in the Rye Grass - Trailblazer Books |
Perrin Whitman was twelve years old and thrilled to travel by wagon train to Oregon Territory with his missionary aunt and uncle, Dr. Marcus and Narcissa Whitman. It was 1843, and life in the wild, unsettled Northwest promised Perrin the adventure he craved but also the opportunity to witness a fierce and tragic battle for peace and freedom.
Upon their arrival in Oregon, Perrin found an immediate friend in the young Indian girl, Shikam, whose brother would later become the famous Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce tribe. Both Perrin and Shikam had the same goal: keep peace between the white settlers and the Indians. But when another wagon train of emigrants brought measles, the Indians become terrified and angry by the sickness overtaking their people. Will Dr. Whitman be able to cure the Indians before war breaks out?
His uncle's life is in danger, but what can Perrin do?

Salt in his Shoes |
Before basketball star Michael Jordan's name was uttered reverently in households all over the planet, young Michael was just a shrimpy kid trying to play ball with the big boys in the neighborhood. Tired of being teased by the biggest boy on the court, Michael is convinced the only solution is to grow taller. His mama smilingly suggests putting salt in his shoes and saying a prayer every night. His daddy tells young Michael that "Being taller may help you play a little better, but not as much as practice, determination, and giving your best will. Those are the things that make you a real winner." And so they are. At 6-foot-6, Michael may not have grown up to be the tallest player on the court, but he sure did turn out to be one of the best! As his mother and his sister, Deloris Jordan and Rosalyn Jordan are in a pretty good position to tell us all about what made Michael a star. They create an image of a cozy, loving family life any child would be happy to come home to. Award-winning illustrator Kadir Nelson's oil pictures of the gangly little Michael with hyperlong arms and oversized hands capture the preteen potential as well as his gawky grace. This warm, uplifting story will encourage young readers to chase their dreams with hard work and faith.
